Salt cairn - Seaside, OR. Salt would be needed on the return trip to flavor and preserve meat. A small party set up the Salt Works at Seaside, Oregon because they had access to relatively dry driftwood and salt water from the ocean. Five kettles, boiling salt water day and night, produced one bushel of salt by February 3, 1806. The Captains felt they would need three times as much. By February 21, they had produced four bushels.
